“You ask me what would happen if all strangers turned to stone
I’ll tell you what might happen if we could always be alone”
-Film School, Hideout (Beggars Banquet, 2007)

THIS WEEK, we find old friends with help from a darker shade of Los Angeles, Film School. This music reeks of sincerity and commitment to intense, dark grooves that lure you in. Film School doesn’t bail out of songs. They write in a way that rides a feeling, paints a landscape. They will clarify your loneliness and frustrations. Check your fear at the door.

Film School records are a start to finish experience, “Hideout” is no exception. It extends ‘moments’. It’s just raw enough and without transparent hooks to latch onto. When you blink, you don’t miss it. You hear it and become it over time and not a second less. Film School is the band that gets more out of less. There are no tricks here, there is no gimmick. They play, we feel. This ‘no-flash allowed’ is why you probably do not hear them on the radio. And they are better off for it.

Film School brings us as fans, a carefully crafted balance between distorted, intense & bleeding guitars matched with Greg Bertan’s eerily soothing vocals. You pause, you take caution. It’s your choice what follows but Film School will get you there one-way or the other.

We found three great songs from “Hideout” that you will hear this week as the story of LG15: The Resistance unfolds. Take a listen and click away if you support these guys. Film School will be on a brief tour of the UK with British Sea Power beginning October 2nd.

Put on your dark sunglasses now.

On the Fly. Off the cuff.
Two Kinds” – This one is dark and inviting. Those sweeping synths bring it all back home and last throughout.

Sick Hipster Nursed By Suicide Girl” – Should panic set in? Where are we going this time? Ok, this is pleasant and futuristic. I like it, I am being nursed (hipster and illness aside). It’s stable. It’s dark. It’s pounding. Here’s a trick on this one -the louder you turn it – the better it gets. There is something about the foundation of this groove that is so primal. But it’s layered in a way that only Film School can. When you listen to this track you realize just how much command they have as a unit over the subtleties of mood (that “6th member”). Think about it.

What I Meant to Say” - Pretty much sums up why Film School is Episode One. Refuse. Resist. Our numbers are growing.
