Our last chapter of the season features the industrial nu-metal stylings of Detroit’s very own, Celldweller.

Let me start by clearing this up. Celldweller is actually one guy who goes by the name Klayton. He creates the kind of music you score your film to. It’s dark, it’s intense but it’s not over the top. He’s probably a teddy bear but his music freaks us out in a good way. Klayton is about to release a record called “Soundtrack for the Voices in My Head Vol. 1” that will be heard in films and TV shows for years to come. And thanks to Celldweller and trueAnthem, you can download this record for FREE all week.

Celldweller really took off in 2003 with a self-titled online-only release that debuted at #17 on Billboard’s Digital Charts. Literally every song on Celldweller has been featured in a movie, video game or TV show. According to its’ label, this feat has been matched by only two other artists: Moby and The Crystal Method. We figured we didn’t want to be the ones left out, so we asked and got lucky!

Now, I’m curious about the close ties between the name Celldweller and the music. Did some googling and found that “Celldweller” reportedly started as a nickname given to Klayton by some friends who said he spent all of his time in the studio. Still, fans maintain that the ‘real’ meaning of the name or the motivations and thoughts behind the songs is entirely unclear. Celldweller publicly claims the name refers to “personal and cultural bondage” but many people, myself included, don’t buy it. I wonder if there’s some even darker, cooler, mysterious stuff going on?

A couple of releases and a few more movies later and we get to Celldweller’s latest work and the opportunity to preview it for you here, first (ignore that Scion commercial from September). Two weeks ago Tokyo Police Club made their network debut on Desperate Housewives. This week, they make their debut on the LG15 network as the Chapter 11 featured artist (way more exciting). And as things are simmering to a boil on the first season of LG15: The Resistance, we couldn’t have a better band to take us on our journey this week.

Tokyo Police Club is a key fixture in the indie-rock world Hundreds of bands are trying RIGHT NOW to break down their success and are just tearing the bottom out of the scene in the process. It’s not the hooks, it’s not the intensity…it’s the grittiness of playing rock n’ roll every night to survive and writing songs inspired by the tension and excitement of everyday life. It shows in TPC’s relentless touring and commitment to breaking the molds of the traditional music business by releasing music in small bursts AND on full releases. Having been lucky enough to see these guys a couple of times I get the distinct feeling their recorded music has a bit of catching up to do to match the insanity of the live show.

Their first full-length record, “Elephant Shell” arrived about 18 months after the now legendary “A Lesson in Crime” (perhaps the best rock EP in recent memory). Lots of expectations. We’ll find out this week if the guys have what it takes but every indication is that Tokyo Police Club is here to stay and is not just another buzz band. They buzz because they are that good.

Singer/bassist David Monks describes TPC’s sound as “wide-eyed post-punk with a tendency to get over excited-so much that someone has to come and tell it to settle down.” It’s figuring out when to mellow out that ‘tendency’ that makes “Elephant Shell” a great record.

Tokyo Police Club will tour all of December in a cross-country Canadian trek with Metric, The Dears, and Sebastian Grainger and the Mountains. Go see this show. Go see live music. Happy Thanksgiving!

Today’s video, Wrong Play, reveals that there is division in the ranks.  When Jonas and Sarah decided to strike at Lifesblood Labs on their own, Maggie and Reed felt betrayed by their friends. Maggie has gone into hiding and Reed appears to be minutes from leaving them as well.

Was Reed’s violent reaction justified?  Will Maggie ever trust Jonas again?  Did Jonas and Sarah leave them out for a reason?  Do you believe Maggie and Reed can be trusted?

Reed Windle is the actor who plays Beaumont on LG15: The Resistance.  Reed is from Boulder, Colorado where he studied at the University of Colorado before transferring to Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles. Before graduating with a BA in Theatre in May 2008, he had the honor of studying at the Moscow Art Theatre where he performed an adaptation of “Conference of the Birds” by Peter Brook. In addition to his theatre experience, Reed has been featured in many student films, including Bridge Stuart’s “Record #7″ and Ken Amarit’s “The Crystal Mermaid.” Since venturing into the professional world, he landed the supporting role of Cliff in the short film “Weak Species” based on of the writings of Dennis Cooper and directed by Dan Faltz. Playing Beaumont in LG15: The Resistance has been his first webseries role and he feels incredibly proud to be part of such a groundbreaking show.

InsideLG15 asked Reed to do describe his experience on LG15: The Resistance: “Playing Beaumont was fun.  I got to work with some really incredible people, get beaten up in a crematorium, mop the floors of an otherwise filthy, abandoned hospital, and carry around Marnette Forrest Gump-style all while wearing an under-sized ‘onesie.’  My only regret is that I didn’t swipe that jumpsuit before we wrapped.”

Did you know Jonas and the crew are into Hip-hip? That’s what I heard. That’s what you’re hearing all week, thank you Illa J.

Now I realize you may not know who Illa J. is or what the foundation of his music is about. As bittersweet as it is, let me recount the story about a very talented set of brothers that you are going to be hearing a lot over the next several months as “Yancey Boys” unfolds into public consciousness.

Illa J.’s brother was the late great producing genius J Dilla who sadly passed away in 2006 at the age of 32. J Dilla produced hit songs for Janet Jackson, Busta Rhymes, The Pharcyde and a ton more. One consequence of losing such a beat guru so young was he left behind a body of finished, but unreleased work. His younger brother Illa picked up the pieces and wrote verse after verse after chorus with them, creating “Yancey Boys” in the process. Having your late brother produce your debut record as an MC must be pretty heavy. I hope Illa finds success in all of this, he’s a real talent that’s endured a struggle to get there.

Maggie may have been able to escape from Lifesblood Labs, but she remains trait positive.  Her footage has revealed that LBL will stop at nothing until they’ve secured the fountain of youth for themselves.  Maggie needs the cure.  Will you help her?

THIS WEEK, we resist to the sounds of Colourmusic, a rare example of a band that does a good job blending genres to find its ‘sound’. In this case, it’s psychedelic pop and rock. Basing their work on Newton’s color theories and the resulting soundscapes, Colourmusic just dropped their debut LP “f, Monday, orange, February, venus, lunatic, 1or 13”, and no, I did not make that title up! The music doesn’t disappoint, every song is a well-thought out work bordering on the complex. Think the Who meet Queen with a little bit of Lou Reed sprinkled in for good measure.

Colourmusic gets downright inventive on stage. There’s no other way to say it, these guys are intriguingly bizarre and truly unforgiving. They’ve had their hair and clothes cut off, been painted, painted the stage and their equipment and who knows what else. They even spent a year (the “Roy Period”) in which all five members lived their lives as the same person, all the way down to trying to date the same girl. And somehow their music reflects this passion for the absurd in an incredibly authentic way when matched with their playing. Go see Colourmusic.

For those in the know, Colourmusic is on a serious rise. Before too long, everyone will be into them and we’ll be able to say we knew them when. They’ve been played on over 160 college radio stations, the Tonight Show and heard on several MTV shows. We’ve laid out below their remaining 2008 concert dates. Go see a show and let us know what you think. Here’s hoping this exposure puts Colourmusic over the edge and into the minds of the masses.
