Chapter 5 Music – Voyager One

Music by: Voyager One
Recommended Listen: Afterhours in the Afterlife (LP)
Suggested Tracks: The Future is Obsolete, The Kids Take Control, Darling O.K.
Contest Alert! – Tickets/CD Giveaway, Deadline Wednesday October 15th.
THIS WEEEK we begin a three-part showcase of featured music in the show from the best bands appearing right now in the 2008 CMJ Festival in New York City. Entering the ring first, the space-rock sounds of Seattle’s Voyager One. Ding Ding.
Voyager One mixes one part psychedelic rock, one part groove and zero parts pretention to make their brand of space-infused rock. There is something organic and straightforward about Voyager’s approach to songwriting. There’s an ethereal quality to every song, lots of drone, not too dark-but to the point. Lots of feeling and seemingly removed lyrics. Lots of “wonder” inspired by lots of listening. This is a rare balance that young bands find themselves spending too much time on either side of. Not for Jeramy & Co. The point is clear. Intentionally murky at times, but clear.
Voyager One have appeared at SXSW, CMJ, played live on KEXP’s “Midday Show” and toured with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. I caught them for the first time somewhere in between and knew right away they would have a place in The Resistance. The momentum is growing, the blogs have noticed. All aboard!
Even though Voyager One already has a few records under their belt I get the impression that there’s a bigger vision or plan they have yet to track down. It may take another solid record to get there. That said, if we’ve done our jobs right, this week’s episode should help send them on their way.
Contest Alert!
In honor of their Episode this week, the guys in Voyager One donated two copies of “Afterhours” and a pair of tickets to one of their CMJ shows next week in New York City. And how do you win this music and concert tix? Very simple, glad you asked.
Leave a comment on this post before Wednesday the 15th. That’s it. I’d love to know what you think about V1 but you are welcome to tell me anything. We’ll shuffle the names of every commenter who posts before Wednesday and draw the winners. Multiple entries always encouraged and certainly increase your odds. We’ll notify the lucky ones via their page on LG15.com this Thursday.

Ooooh! I like their stuff. The Future is Obsolete kind of reminds me a bit of Duran Duran, with the vocals and all. Great songs!

It’s nice having the player embedded here on InsideLG15 - and great having all the music in one place.
The tracks have been really good this season - I enjoyed the energy and taughtness of all the picks from Film School, Voxtrot, Push Play, and the Teenagers. I like the Voyager One songs too, but they have just a little bit too much synth sounding drums etc, and repetition for my taste. I like to hear a drummer hit and scratch and just go off - like the guy in Jack Johnson’s “Mud Football.”

I live soooo close to the city!! It’d be awesome if I could just take a train in and get to see one of their concerts!!!

Wait… how will the tickets help all those West Coaster’s? Wouldn’t it be pretty hard to charter a plane and fly over here just a week before the concert?
