Push Play

Music by: Push Play
Recommended Listen: Deserted (LP)
Suggested Tracks: Away, Away, The Life, Far From Beautiful (FFB)

“Get on your feet and start that motivation
Get ready, set, hit the floor tonight”-Far From Beautiful, Push Play.

THIS WEEK, we hear from New York’s latest homegrown sensation and the band that will soon be dominating your playlist, Push Play.

I had this dream a while back when I was in high school. I started a rock band with a few buddies. We started playing shows at every dive and pizza joint that would have us. Girls at school started to notice us. Guys at school were surprised by how hard we rocked. We handed out 20,000 flyers to promote our appearance at a big New York City club. We sold out that club, all 1,200 seats – and had to turn away another 500 screaming kids. All the big record labels begged to sign us. We scored a big time manager, the best attorney, the most prestigious agents and an opening slot on a tour with Miley Cyrus. All of a sudden we were being compared to the biggest bands in the world. The future never looked so bright. And then I woke up and found my dream was actually to be in Push Play.

It’s rare that we come across a group that is as focused on getting their name out there, as they are serious about playing music. Push Play is one of them. Ignore the 1.5 million plays and 50 thousand friends on Myspace. Ignore the self-released, self-supported “Deserted” which has sold over 40,000 copies and been at the top of the iTunes 100 chart. Ignore the New York Times label, “Regional Phenomenon”. Go to one Push Play concert and experience how beloved they are by those already in the know. Have you ever heard a crowd scream louder than the music? Does that remind you of a band your parents used to tell you about from Liverpool growing up? That’s the kind of absolute mania we are talking about. And, it’s hard to ignore mania.

We found three Push Play songs to help tell this week’s Chapter leading up to the Saturday Episode. Take a listen and after you buy these three on iTunes, go say what’s up to the guys on Myspace. We’re in luck to have them aboard.

On the Fly, Off the Cuff
“Away, Away” – My inner teenage-girl goes wild.

“Stop Staring” – Guilty pleasure. Stuck on repeat.

“Far From Beautiful (FFB)” - Cool intro, tone sets itself from the pack

Chapter 2 Music – Voxtrot

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Music by: Voxtrot
Recommended Listen: Voxtrot (LP)
Suggested Tracks: Kid Gloves, Easy, Blood Red Blood

“Empty streets under my feet,
How did we get so far?”-“Blood Red Blood”/Voxtrot

THIS WEEK, our story is told to the sounds of Austin, Texas’ Voxtrot.  Voxtrot is not just another indie rock band trying to get lucky.  They write relentlessly, they tour, they connect with their fans through YouTube feeling contrived or over produced.  Sound familiar?   They are a single away from breaking out of the pack and becoming a household name.  Why wait to get on board?

I first heard Voxtrot driving in the patchy rain from Colorado to the East Coast a few years ago somewhere on I-70.  I was by myself-the sun was just coming out.  I couldn’t believe then how soulful pop melodies could sound so sincere and manage to feel that way a thousand miles later. These melodies were so inviting, but at the same time, not forced.  I get the feeling Voxtrot isn’t a “self-conscious” band that does whatever it can to bring in more fans or appease some skeptical label exec. I get the feeling Voxtrot makes music for Voxtrot, and the point is to always be getting better rather than reach a specific milestone or destination.  And I remember thinking it was so cool that a band found a following by releasing their music in short bursts in the form of three EP’s.  Smart music, smart business-don’t let people get too much at one time, don’t ever settle into ‘the same’.  Fast forward a year or so to their online documentary “Reaching for the Lasers” about the recording of their first full-length LP “Voxtrot” and you can’t help but be inspired (and entertained).

The distinctive Voxtrot feel is eagerness and melody over instrumental layering.  Songs get louder as they build, sections that could go for emotional broke are tempered and delicately executed.  These guys strike a delicate nerve and because of it Voxtrot manages to separate themselves from the majority of acts in their way both on disc and in concert.

On the Fly.  Off the cuff.
Kid Gloves” – Quirky sound and feel gives way to cinematic chorus that stays with you.  “You have to touch me with Kid Gloves”-sarcasm and sensitivity.  These themes are part of our story, it’s nice to have music that reflects where we’re going.

Easy” – A song for Jonas, a song for anyone trying to work out the doubt in their mind.  And it’s not easy with “all the hours past, the body pressed to the wall.  “Easy” is why Voxtrot is our band for Chapter 2.

Blood Red Blood” – Ramesh’s vocal seems to work with and against the music.  No fluff.  Cinematic chorus.  Horns are a nice touch.  This one is a gem.

Chapter 1 Music – Film School

Monday, September 15th, 2008

Music by: FILM SCHOOL
Recommended Listen: Hideout (LP)
Suggested Tracks: Two Kinds, Sick Hipster Nursed By Suicide Girl, What I Meant to Say

“You ask me what would happen if all strangers turned to stone
I’ll tell you what might happen if we could always be alone”
-Film School, Hideout (Beggars Banquet, 2007)

THIS WEEK, we find old friends with help from a darker shade of Los Angeles, Film School. This music reeks of sincerity and commitment to intense, dark grooves that lure you in. Film School doesn’t bail out of songs. They write in a way that rides a feeling, paints a landscape. They will clarify your loneliness and frustrations. Check your fear at the door.

Film School records are a start to finish experience, “Hideout” is no exception. It extends ‘moments’. It’s just raw enough and without transparent hooks to latch onto. When you blink, you don’t miss it. You hear it and become it over time and not a second less. Film School is the band that gets more out of less. There are no tricks here, there is no gimmick. They play, we feel. This ‘no-flash allowed’ is why you probably do not hear them on the radio. And they are better off for it.

Film School brings us as fans, a carefully crafted balance between distorted, intense & bleeding guitars matched with Greg Bertan’s eerily soothing vocals. You pause, you take caution. It’s your choice what follows but Film School will get you there one-way or the other.

We found three great songs from “Hideout” that you will hear this week as the story of LG15: The Resistance unfolds. Take a listen and click away if you support these guys. Film School will be on a brief tour of the UK with British Sea Power beginning October 2nd.

Put on your dark sunglasses now.

On the Fly. Off the cuff.
Two Kinds” – This one is dark and inviting. Those sweeping synths bring it all back home and last throughout.

Sick Hipster Nursed By Suicide Girl” – Should panic set in? Where are we going this time? Ok, this is pleasant and futuristic. I like it, I am being nursed (hipster and illness aside). It’s stable. It’s dark. It’s pounding. Here’s a trick on this one -the louder you turn it – the better it gets. There is something about the foundation of this groove that is so primal. But it’s layered in a way that only Film School can. When you listen to this track you realize just how much command they have as a unit over the subtleties of mood (that “6th member”). Think about it.

What I Meant to Say” - Pretty much sums up why Film School is Episode One. Refuse. Resist. Our numbers are growing.

PF5: The Meepers

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

From PF5: The Meepers:
Over the last few weeks, we’ve been hard at work refreshing the LG15 website, waiting for the latest installment in the LG15 Universe, LG15: The Resistance. The story has already thrilled and confused us on LG15.com and around the web. Who or what is the 436? Why is it disrupting a variety of video serving websites through the known Universe? How is this connected to our browser caches? Where do flash incompatibilities between PCs and Apple computers fit into all this, and can java be trusted? Why is our logo a shade of olive green no one has seen since 1970’s tupperware? If Sarah is bored, imagine how we feel. Most importantly, why is Jonas so angry all the time? Come on, he totally dissed Jennie in the series finale, and Jennie is incredibly hot, and now we know Sarah was the real plantcake. Will she rejoin the fight? And what the heck was in that tell-tale heart box Spencer and Taylor had in the life raft? Will Jessica Rose ever appear in something not involving a Sorority?

PF5: The Meepers explores the continuing adventure of LG15 viewers as they rapidly refresh the comments page over and over, in the vain hope that today will be a two video day, juggle for world peace, try to avoid falling into any plotholes, update the LGPedia, visit chat, the forums, InsideLG15, Anchor Cove, and LG15 Today, all while fighting against trolls and the mysteries of Crowley’s weird taste in old furniture that may pose an even greater threat…

WE ARE THE MEEPERS

WE WILL NOT BE STOPPED

LG15: The Resistance private beta

Monday, September 8th, 2008

We’re very excited to announce that we are opening up a private beta for the community to test the LG15 social network. This is a beta version of the software so it will have errors and incomplete features. We’d like to get feedback from the community about bugs you find and features you’d like to see added. Please note that there is a possibility that we will have to wipe the database (ERASE all of your data) prior to our public launch on Monday the 15th. We’ll try to avoid that, but understand that right now this is just an opportunity for you to test the site. The first 250 people that send an email to invite@lg15.com will receive an invite.

Enjoy!

Update from the LG15 Universe

Sunday, September 7th, 2008

As you know, we are preparing for a re-launch of the LG15 website that will include a new homepage (this is live now at LG15.com), the launch of the LG15 social network (holding page is live at LG15.com/theresistance), and a re-designed look/feel for Inside LG15 and the LGPedia to match the rest of the site. We’re really excited about the new social network and the new look/feel. One thing that we are doing as part of this process is to bring as much official information into the LGPedia as possible.

From the very beginning we created the LGPedia to be the #1 source for information about the LG15 universe and we chose to use wiki software so that it could be edited and improved by the fans. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Zoey and other contributors the LGPedia has flourished. It’s truly amazing. What we’d like to do going forward is to provide as much official graphics and information as possible so that the LGPedia is up-to-date and as thorough and exhaustive of a resource as it can possibly be. Additionally, we’ve had requests from cast and crew members and EQAL employees to put some guidelines in place concerning the inclusion of their personal information in the LGPedia. We really need to respect people’s privacy and thought this was a fair request. With this in mind Broken Kid is in the process of placing certain pages under administrator-only control so that we can protect people’s privacy and provide accurate information. These pages include all the cast, crew, and EQAL employee pages, and anything that refers to real people and real events/locations.

Please understand that the VAST majority of LGpedia will remain 100% community editable, including ALL of the pages and sections that refer to the fictional elements of shows in the LG15 Universe. We’re very excited about the increased profile the LGPedia will be taking within the LG15 universe, including the link on the homepage, and eventually inclusion throughout the site in a more integrated fashion.

Thanks!
