We wanted to let you know that our good friend and co-Creator, Mesh Flinders, has left the show. We wish Mesh the best of luck with his creative endeavors and we’ll be rooting for him.

Mesh wanted to say goodbye, so please check out his post below.

Miles, Greg, and Amanda

Hey everyone,

So the time has come for me to move on from Lonelygirl15. I loved working on the show over the last year and a half and I’ll miss all of you very much. I’ve always wanted to make films and thanks to the success of the show I have a great opportunity to do that so I’m leaving to focus on those efforts. I wish Miles, Greg, Amanda and everyone else working on the show the best of luck in the future. They’ve become like family to me and I will miss working with them very much. I will also miss the opportunity to read and listen to all the wonderful feedback you, the fans, have given to the show. No other creative venture I can think of has as much participation or as passionate a following as LG. It’s been an amazing ride and I will continue to follow the show as a fan, now, for the rest of my life. I will miss all of you.

Much love and appreciation,

Mesh

Juggling for World Peace

Member Profile: Mike (who sometimes uses his girlfriend’s account: NikkiBisDaMon)

When he joined LG15: The first video I watched new was, “My Parents Suck… ” which came out July 4, 2006. Wow, it’s been longer than I thought :)

Favorite character: Daniel. He’s an underdog who keeps striving for better things. His character has grown the most over the course of the series.

Favorite video: Swimming! I’ve known girls who act exactly like Bree in this video. It’s cute, I love the music and of course it asks the question of the ages, “Whatever happened to that girl, Cassie?”

Lastly, I wanted to mention Amanda my like of your Nikki Bower videos. My girlfriend and I teamed up and made a video tribute for Alli last year. I found the pictures and she put them together with some music. Cara got an email from Alli thanking her because somehow she saw the video and it made Cara’s day and I thought it was very nice too :) I wanted to end by giving you a link to that video. Nikki Bower Tribute

Thanks Mike! I love Nikki too. I know she’s been gone for a bit, but don’t worry, she hasn’t disappeared.

Brand Integrations . . . My Two Cents

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

Hey everyone,

I’ve been reading your comments all day and the debate over Taylor’s latest video has been FASCINATING! As you all know, we do our absolute best to write and produce a great show. Yeah, sometimes it isn’t always up to your (and our) standards, but this isn’t easy. However, there are those times when things come together creatively and we all feel so lucky to be part of this project.

As for the commercial aspect of what we do, it is kind of a necessary evil. We would much rather just tell a great story and not worry about having to make enough money to pay for production. Unfortunately, that is not a reality. We have lots of REALLY talented people working full time on this show. Over the last year and a half, our team has grown into almost the equivalent of a small TV show. Therefore, we need to come up with creative ways to feed all these mouths.

We tried using services like Revver and we do receive some revenue from YouTube because they show display ads around our videos. However, as many of you know, these services pay VERY little. It’s not nearly enough to sustain our production budget.

So, what are we left to do? We try to come up with creative brand integrations that accomplish two things: 1) entertain the community and 2) make the brand feel like they are getting good promotion for their product. Sometimes we do a great job . . . Spencer Gilman. Sometimes it’s not as great . . . Tampax. However, we try our best to make sure the integration does not interfere with the story and hopefully makes it better. We are grateful that some of you really understand what we are trying to do and write amazing supportive comments like this one from chippercat:

There are some of us that totally GET that this is a new medium of entertainment… and that the developers, writers, actors and crew deserve to get paid for what they do… hence product placement.

I applaud the creativity… I apprecaite the expanded storylines and spin offs… most of all I am totally hooked on this new, INTERACTIVE form of entertainment!! I am currently following Lg15, Kate Modern, Redearth, Jack AND Quarterlife. I work 50-60 hours a week, follow these stories, participate actively in them and STILL have a life away from it all. I just watch a lot less TV now and play a lot less video games.

If you don’t enjoy this new world… that is your choice. I just really do NOT understand what all the fuss is about. I, for one, feel very excited to be a part of this new platform as it unfolds… and I see all these trial and error attempts at forming the face of this new concept very interesting and pioneering!! The more creative and involved the product placement is… the bigger the payoff. They are trying new things.

These are exciting times, folks… one day you will probably look back and appreciate the significance of it all.

Thanks Chipper, we are excited too!

With the current integration for Jumper - there, I admitted it :) - we are really happy with how things are going. Jack is a cool character and his story arc is getting very interesting. If you don’t believe me, ask hopefulsemblence . . . yes hopeful, I read all your blog posts. Also, Jack’s story is NOT required viewing to follow the lonelygirl15 storyline. Taylor is following Jack’s videos closely and is in communication with Jack, but we promise you do not have to follow what he is doing to understand the main plotline. Think of it as a really creative integration starring your favorite characters that is related to your favorite show but not required viewing . . . it’s not even in the same fictional universe. Is Jack telling the truth? Can he teleport? We don’t know and neither does Taylor.

So that’s my little speech for today. We do hope that you watch all Jack’s vids and enjoy his storyline . . . and it would be GREAT if you went and saw Jumper and told the great people at Fox that you went because of lonelygirl15!!! :) Also, we invite you to give us input and feedback into what else you would have liked from us for this integration. Finally, in the comments below, give us some ideas of other integrations you think would be cool and would enhance the story. Maybe with all your help, we can get some of those sponsors to support our show so that we can keep producing for years and years!

Thanks again for making this community awesome. We always appreciate your candid feedback and unflinching support.

Greg

P.S. Here is a list of all the brands that have paid for sponsorship in lonelygirl15 and KateModern:

Lonelygirl15
Hershey’s Icebreakers Sours Gum
Neutrogena
20th Century Fox – “Jumper”

KateModern

LG15 is a Community

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

Amanda has asked me to write a weekly entry on Inside LG15. She had to prod me a few times, but here’s my first post. Look for a new one each Wednesday. I’m going to focus on internet technology and how it relates to the LG15 Universe and our company. So… today I just want to put out there that LG15 is more than simply a couple of web serials (lonelygirl15 and KateModern), it’s a community. The LG15 Universe extends beyond the shows that we produce and includes every member of the community on LG15, Bebo, Facebook, LG15 Today, and many other websites. We’ve been inching along at making the LG15 website more robust, but as you know it’s taken some time. Nonetheless a vibrant community has formed around a show that began with a girl who made video blogs in her bedroom.

What makes a community? There’s the technology (profile pages, messaging, chat, forums, etc.), but most importantly it’s the collection of people that share similar interests. In the case of LG15, all of you share an interest in lonelygirl15 and/or KateModern, but you also share a lot of other interests. As LG15 evolves and we add new features to the website, this will become a place for you to interact with your friends and interact with the shows. So, don’t just sit back and click the play button… sign up for a profile, comment on the videos, talk in the forums, join the chat, and contribute to growing database of everything LG15 in the LGPedia. LG15 is a community and we want you to be part of the fun. Oh… most importantly check out the live event coming up in San Francisco. W00T!

The Shadow of Death

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

Jerry (aka voyboy) writes:

I’m loving InsideLG15! I have a question I have wanted to ask for a while: When you guys shot 286 (Shadow of Death), was that a real tree that was hit by lightning? To me that was the creepiest.

We have so many stories from that specific video and our trip to the Grand Canyon that we’ve never shared. So here’s a small taste:

I rented a Suburban and drove to the Grand Canyon with Alexandra, Jackson, Katherine, Kevin, Marcello, and Yousef. We stayed about 30 miles away from the Canyon and drove in each day to film. The first day we decided to take our time and get to know the area. We drove off the main highway and onto a side road that led us around a mountain. It also led us into no man’s land. “This’ll be so much fun. We’ll get some great footage here!”

Then our car got stuck in the mud.

At first, it was an “adventure” as Marcello would call it. It involved lots and lots of mud and the loss of at least one pair of shoes. Jackson, Yousef, and Marcello tried every trick they had, but it only got worse. We laughed at our circumstances and even joked about the very dark rain clouds heading toward us. However, when a man on a tractor showed up (on the biggest tractor I’ve ever seen) and could not pull us out, it wasn’t so much fun anymore.

Finally, a couple of deer hunters (with knives on their belts) showed up and removed us from the mud. This “pit stop” caused us to be a full day behind schedule. But looking back now, it’s one of the funniest and most memorable moments I’ve experienced during the show.

The day we filmed Shadow of Death the weather would not cooperate. As we drove around the Canyon all we could see was fog. Rain and fog. How can you film in that? Then, suddenly, the fog lifted and all we could see was this amazing forest - covered in smoke! The forestry service was setting controlled fires and we were looking at the smoldering aftermath. Then, on top of the smoke and fire, it hailed! So there we were, at the Grand Canyon, surrounded by a “controlled” forest fire covered in hail. It was just too perfect.

We pulled over by the side of the road and filmed. For hours and hours. There was no bathroom, no food, and Marcello almost broke his neck. It was also one of the first times Katherine ever filmed with us. She was such a trooper! Everyone went above and beyond that day. I was so proud of them!

Jerry, what you see in the video is a real fire, but not one caused by lightning.

Do you have a question about a video? We might just answer it.

- Amanda
